From Greed to Gratitude

April 2010 Edition of Encounter Living and Leisure Magazine

Today I will speak on the importance of integrity, and how a handshake used to be a gentlemen’s agreement. Now contracts are not enough, and many people are looking out only for themselves, and do not care how they may hurt or affect another. This segment, From Greed to Gratitude, can be an eye opener to those who choose to live in integrity. In business and in one’s personal life, what is your word if you do not have integrity or trustworthiness? Can someone trust your word, your character, without question? Many people speak from both sides of their mouth, but who do they really think they are fooling? Perhaps only themselves.

My focus is to help others understand that any successful business is not based solely on profits or losses; it is based on your word, your character, and your sense of trustworthiness. For example, look at the state that Toyota is in right now. Why do you think they are being exposed at this time? Perhaps, greed became their central focus, not consumer safety or the best interest of the consumer. Integrity, honesty and concern for the consumer are truly key to a lasting and successful business. Do the CEOs and stockholders need millions, or even billions, of dollars to feel successful? If that is the case, how sad indeed that they have compromised themselves for greed. Do we as a nation really want to support the greedy? Do we really need to buy all those products and services from businesses that could really care less about us? Look at how the pharmaceutical companies, the AMA and insurance companies exploit us – for what, greed? Why do we turn a blind eye to those who are using us and have no real concern for our welfare? Have we, too, become so selfish and greedy that we don’t care about our fellow man, or even ourselves?

Most of us were taught early on in life to respect those in authority. Can we really trust those who say they have our best interest at heart? Our ancestors, as recent as my grandparents, would be shocked to see how the world has changed; self absorbed, greedy, ruthless, and no concern for their fellow man. In my grandparents’ and parents’ time, neighbors came together to help each other in times of need or crisis. Now people don’t even know their neighbor, and most of us live separate, and miles away from our own family of origin. In reality, people are isolated, and a sense of community is a thing of the past. One of my favorite shows is Andy Griffith, for this tells my age. However, I love the sense of community they had in Mayberry, and the level of acceptance and love they had for each other. I wonder where our values, and our respect for our neighbors, our community, our country, and the world at large have gone. I know this does not apply to everyone, but I am just asking to examine the principles in which you were perhaps taught. Do you live by the Golden Rule – Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Do you live by these principles, or are you in need of an attitudinal adjustment? As you look inside your heart and examine your beliefs, your motives, and how you live your life, are you proud of that which you hold as your own basic principles of love, kindness, compassion and consideration for your fellow man? Perhaps if we return back to the simpler life, where we didn’t need so much in our lives, and relied on God, our family, and our own sense of purpose and direction, perhaps peace can truly prevail upon this planet.

I believe the current global economic crisis can truly be healed by one person at a time. As each person makes a conscious effort to give what they can, regardless if it is just a smile, a handshake, the concern for your fellow man is truly healing on so many levels. Just as the Haitian earthquake has brought out our love and compassion for our fellow man, it is during these times of crisis that we are able to be the best that we can be. Therefore, realize the current economic crisis has a purpose – and all the earth changes and natural disasters have a purpose. It has helped us to open our hearts to our brothers and sisters, and in this generosity, we are learning to be grateful, not greedy. But first learn to live in gratitude for what you have been given, and what you are able to give and you will have a truly successful personal and professional life.

As we create our lives, we all affect each other, as we are all one. When humanity begins to understand that each of our thoughts and actions affect the whole, humanity will experience the oneness that will allow us to ascend to a higher consciousness, expression of our divine spiritual selves.
